Steve Jobs: iPhone 4 Antenna Problem a "Non Issue," You’re Holding it Wrong
Having recpetion woes with your new iPhone 4? Don’t blame the device, you’re just doing it wrong, suggests Steve Jobs and the rest of the Cupertino gang, who dismissed the reception complaints as a “non-issue.”
“Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas,” Apple said int a statement. “This is a fact of life for every wireless phone.
“If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of the many available cases.”
The above statement is an expanded version of Steve Jobs’ initial answer to an email asking what Apple plans to do about the signal dropping issue. Short and to the point, Jobs simply stated, “Non issue. Just avoid holding it that way.”
Spencer Webb, an antenna designer, goes into a bit more detail on his blog, explaining that the iPhone 4 has two symmetrical slots in the stainless frame. When covered, the antenna performance inevitably suffers, he says.
“There is no way around this, it’s a design compromise that is forced by the requirements of the FCC, AT&T, Apple’s marketing department, and Apple’s industrial designers, to name a few.”
Caveat emptor.

Droid X Now Up for Pre-Order at Best Buy
Let iPhone 4 early adopters debate with Jobs and company whether Apple’s latest smartphone has a legitimate design flaw, or if the reception issues are the result of user error; you can avoid the whole back and forth by jumping on the Android bandwagon. And as luck (and well timed marketing) would have it, Best Buy is now taking pre-orders for Motorola’s upcoming Droid X smartphone.
“With the buzz we’ve seen around the Android platform, Best Buy is confident that consumers will be thrilled about the Verizon Droid X by Motorola pre-sale,” said Scott Anderson, senior director of merchandising at Best Buy Mobile. “It has been a great summer for smartphones with the HTC EVO and iPhone 4 launches, and the addition of the Droid X adds another strong option for our customers to consider.”
The Droid X is selling for $200 with a 2-year service agreement, and that’s without any rebate shenanigans to wrestle with. Not a bad deal for arguably the most anticipated Android phone right now, and while you’ll still pay the same by ordering directly through Verizon, you’ll have to first contend with a $100 mail-in-rebate.
For those of you who have been keeping up with the smartphone market, the Droid X comes bult around Google’s Android 2.1 platform and sports a 4.3-inch ‘edge-to-edge’ display. Other features include 8GB of internal storage, 16GB microSD card, 1GHz processor, and three (yes, THREE) mics.

eMachines Clings to Relevance, Launches Svelte Home Entertainment Rig
Believe it or not, eMachines is still pumping out PCs, only these bear little resemblance to the ultra-budget (read: low quality) rigs of yesteryear. These days, eMachines answers to a bigger vendor, having been scooped up by Gateway in 2004, which in turn was acquired by Acer in 2007. All this maneuvering has put eMachines in a better position to release low-cost PCs without cutting as many corners as before, and that seems to be the case with the new Mini-e ER1402.
With a sleek and glossy black diamond shaped profile and the size, weight, and thickness of a book, the new Mini-e might stand out in your home theater, but not as an eyesore as an eMachines once would.
“Today’s cost-conscious consumer will find style, features and affordability come together beautifully in the low-cost eMachines Mini-e,” said Steve Smith, senior business manager, consumer desktops for eMachines. “It’s an inconspicuous, streamlined computing solution for any room of the home where consumers want to enjoy movies, photos, music and other online entertainment.”
While we’re smitten with the exterior, the interior is more of what we’d expect from an eMachines. This wasn’t built to replace your gaming machine, and instead meshes low-cost, yet serviceable components into a respectable HTPC. Inside and around the Mini-e you’ll find an AMD Athlon NEO processor, Nvidia GeForce 9300 graphics, 2GB of memory, 160GB hard drive, memory card reader, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, four USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and a mounting kit for slapping the whole thing to the back of you television.
The new Mini-e is available now for $300.

Cooler Master’s Latest CPU Cooler Lays More Pipes than Super Mario
Continuing its engine-inspired theme, Cooler Master this week announced the V6, the latest addition to the V8 and V10 family of CPU heatsinks.
The Vx series is named such because of the double “V” heatpipe design, and as you might have guessed from the product title, this one comes with six of them. The V6 also comes constructed with asymmetrical aluminum fins and up to two optional snap-on fans. As Cooler Master pitches it, the double-V heatpipe array helps spread out the heatpipes to make better use of the cooling fins, while also allowing airflow to reach each individual pipe.
“Under the hood of V6 lies an innovative sleek V-shaped heatpipe array, a very different concept from traditional heatpipe parallel placements, which helps drive heat dissipation by providing a clear path for heat removal under mid or high air pressure situations,” Cooler Master says. “The asymmetrical aluminum fins, a non-traditional fin stacking design, help accelerates airflow by following the airflow behavior generated from the attached 120mm PWM red LED fan. The easy snap-on brackets allows for optional expansion of a second 120mm fan makes doubling the airflow from your heatsink a breeze.”
Look for the V6 to start shipping within the next few weeks. No word yet on price.
